It’s now known that cats readily get heartworms, though in lower numbers than dogs. Asthmatic or allergic symptoms in cats could be a sign of heartworm disease. Now there are tests available for testing our pet cats for heartworm infection. A survey done on random feral cats at the A.C.V.C. recently revealed infected cats from the Kerrville area. The worms were seen on ultrasound on the valves of the heart and the heart was greatly enlarged. On autopsy, one cat’s heart had 5 adult heartworms and other worms were migrating through the lungs and outside the trachea (wind pipe). Unfortunately, one of the other signs of heartworm disease in cats is sudden death.
